The Exchange

Rich Easter only wants what he's owed. When he sells priceless information, the innocent pay.

“All Supernatural creatures are being rounded up. They will be transferred to secure facilities and exterminated. Mermaids, Were-folk, Biters, all non-humans nation-wide will be eliminated.”

Rich Easter felt ill. As the woman on the screen delivered a death sentence to the creatures with which humans had been living side by side for thirty-some years, Rich thought about the last time he’d seen her. The word eliminated clanged like a bell against his skull as his mental video of their last meeting played.

The note had said to be on the beach at midnight if he wanted to get paid handsomely for his life’s work. While it seemed strange, he was too broke to be suspicious. He loved his work, but it did not pay and between alimony and child support, and a daughter who couldn’t visit because his apartment wasn’t fit, he was getting desperate. He didn’t know who he’d been expecting when he showed up on that beach, exhausted by life and grasping at straws, but it certainly hadn’t been the woman who appeared in front of him.
